The great labor day Hurricane is the only category 5 Hurricane to date to ever
strike florida, it was the most violent Hurricane to have hit Florida to Date.
The lowest Barometric pressure of 26.35 inches makes it the second lowest pressure
of a Hurricane in the Atlantic Basin(Hurricane Gilbert is the lowest)Sustained
winds were estimated at 200 mph with this storm and damage observed was consistent
with winds of 250 mph. An exact wind speed was impossible because all wind
instruments in the Hurricanes path was destroyed. The hurricane had extraordinary
storm surge, which caused a Sea Level rise of over 18 Feet in several places.
Railroad tracks were reported washed off 30 foot high bridges.408 people were
killed in Florida mainly from drowning from this Hurricane.The Florida east
Coast Railroad Overseas branch suffered such extensive damage the railroad was
closed, ending a significant phase of railroad expansion in Florida.
