Hurricane Gilbert formed into a Tropical Depression East of the Lesser Antilles on
Septemebr 8th. Gibert became a Tropical Storm on the 9th and a hurricane on the 10th
Gibert then continued to gain strength and headed for Jamaica. Gilbert struck Jamaica
on September 12th as a category 3 hurricane. Gilbert became a Category 4 hurricane near
Grand Cayman islands with winds approaching 140 mph. Shortly after Gilbert passed Grand
Cayman it became a category 5 hurricane. On September 13th Gilbert had a pressure of 888
MB or 26.22 inches. That is the lowest pressure recorded for an Atalantic basin hurricane.
On the morning of September 14th Gilbert hit the Yucatan Peninsula. Storm surge at Cancun
Beach was 20 feet. Gilbert then headed for the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall on the
Mexican coast 2 days later. Gilbert then dissapated and ended up bringing much needed rain
to the Midwest. Gilbert caused 5 billion in damages and killed 318 people.
