Hurricane Fran was a Cape verde storm. On August 23 rd Fran became a Tropical Depression
The depression moved west without gaing strength for 2 days. Fran became a hurricane on August
29. Fran then moved to the west/northwest on a path toward the Carolinas. Fran became a category
3 hurricane and turned toward the Northwest and gained speed. At its peak top wind speeds were
105 knots and Central pressure was at 946 MB. Fran made landfall at Cape Fear, North Carolina
while moving at 15 knots. Storm surge was estimated at 8 to 12 feet. Extensive flooding happened
well inland in areas of the Carolinas,Virginia and West Virginia. Fran was responsible for 34
deaths and at the height of the storm power was out to about 4.5 million people in the Carolinas
and Virginia. Fran is estimated to have cost 1.6 billion dollars in damage.
