Hurricane Camille, one of only 2 Category 5 hurricanes to Strike the U.S. Camille formed in the Caribbean
and moved into the Gulf of Mexico were it intensified quickly and moved toward Mississippi. When Camille
made Landfall in Mississippi near Pass Christian winds were sustained at 200 MPH with higher gusts. The
storm surge was 27 feet high at Pass Christian and waves on top of that were 15 feet. As Camille moved
inland and weakened to a depression it dumped heavy rains on West Virginia and parts of Virginia. Camille
dumped up to 30 inches of rain in those 2 states in six hours producing flash flooding.
